Kraftwerk
The Plain Band is organized at Reuschlein Brothers Hall, Plain, Wisconsin, USA, with William Marshall, one of the best local clarinet players, as instructor. The accordian and mouth organ are played by Joe Schwartz, violin by John Frank, drum by John H. Liegel. The flute, trombone, clarinet and several cornets are played by the other members. The fox trot, waltz, two-step, and square dance are popular in their repertoire.
R.U.R. [Rossum's Universal Robots], written by Karel Capek, has its first performance, a production by the amateur theatrical society Klicpera in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic, Europe. The play is memorable mostly because it marks the first time the word robot is ever used, having been coined by Capek's brother Josef. The word catches on and will inspire others writers, film-makers and song-writers. Memorable songs inspired by robots include Robot Man by Connie Francis [1960], The Robots by Kraftwerk [1978], Are Friends Electric by Gary Numan[1979].

Hansjorg Moroder is born in Groden, Italy, Europe. After moving to Germany he will find succes in the early 1970s as Giorgio Moroder, an electronic pop pioneer, often cited as an influence on Kraftwerk. His electronic productions for artists including Donna Summer will powerfully influence disco music.
Ray Noble And His Orchestra record Harlem Nocturne for Columbia Records in the USA. Theirs is the first recorded version of the song, which will become a jazz standard.
Peter Zinovieff is born in London, UK. As a pioneer of electronic music, he will found and head Electronic Music Studios [EMS] whose VCS and Synthi A synthesisers will be used by musicians including Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, David Bowie and White Noise.
Beach Boys record I Get Around at Western Recorders, Los Angeles, California, USA. Intriguingly, I Get Around will give the quintet their first Top Ten hit in the UK where surf culture is virtually unheard of but, even more bizzarely, their fascination with cars and driving will inspire Kraftwerk in 1974 to create the first bona fide electronic rock hit, Autobahn, as a German equivalent of Beach Boys pop.

The Who complete a German tour with a gig at The Rheinhalle, Dusseldorf. Support on this gig is local band The Beathovens, which includes Wolfgang Flur, later to become a member of Kraftwerk.

It is announced via Kraftwerk's website that the legendary German band's co-founder, Florian Schneider, has left the group after 38 years. No reason is given.
